Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how The Common Room ("we", "us"), reachable at https://the-common-room.club, handles information when you visit this website.

Information we collect

We do not require accounts and do not directly collect personal information, with these exceptions:

  • Newsletter: if you subscribe, we store the email address you provide, used solely to send you our newsletter. You can unsubscribe at any time.
  • Quiz results: your Sorting Hat house and quiz results are stored only in your own browser (localStorage) and are never sent to our servers.
  • Acceptance letter & Howler tools: the names and email address you enter are used once, to deliver that single email via our email provider, and are not stored by us or added to any mailing list. Howlers always identify their sender. Please only send letters and Howlers to people who will welcome them.

Advertising and cookies

We use Google AdSense to display advertisements. Google and its partners use cookies (including the DoubleClick cookie) to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings or www.aboutads.info.

Affiliate links

Outbound links to retailers (such as Amazon) contain an affiliate tag. The retailer may set cookies on its own domain to attribute purchases. See our Affiliate Disclosure.

Analytics

We may use privacy-respecting, aggregate analytics to understand which pages are popular. No personally identifying profile is built about you.

Children

This site is a general-audience fan site. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (e.g. GDPR in the EU, CCPA in California), you may have rights to access or delete personal data. Since we hold almost none, this usually amounts to unsubscribing from the newsletter — but you may contact us with any request.

Changes

We will update this page if our practices change, and revise the date above.
