The Charms Practical Just Went Live — Here's How to Score an Outstanding

The castle has a new daily examiner: trace three wand movements correctly and bank up to 30 house points. Here's how the grading actually works.

Hogwarts just got stricter. Tucked into the castle experience is a new daily ritual: the Charms Practical, a timed spellwork test that grades your wandwork and pays out in house points. It’s been live for a few days now, and it’s already the fastest way to move your house up the table.

What the practical actually is

Scroll to the Charms Practice room on the castle page and an examiner sets three wand movements for the day — real spell-adjacent choreography like Wingardium Leviosa’s swish-and-flick or Alohomora’s unlocking loop. Each movement is a short string of star-shaped nodes scattered across the room. Tap them in the correct order to trace the pattern; tap out of sequence and the movement resets.

You get one attempt at the full set per day. Come back after midnight and the examiner has written three new movements on the board.

How the grading works

Every clean node earns marks; every mistake costs you. Land all three movements without a slip and you’re looking at the top grade:

  • Outstanding (O) — 28+ points
  • Exceeds Expectations (E) — 22–27 points
  • Acceptable (A) — 16–21 points
  • Poor (P) — under 16, “the feather caught fire”

The maximum is 30 points per day, and it’s genuinely achievable — the patterns are short, the failure mode is just “start that movement over,” and the whole test takes under a minute once you know the shapes. Whatever you score gets banked straight to whichever house the Sorting Hat already placed you in. Not sorted yet? The points wait for you — get sorted first, then come collect them.

Why it’s worth the daily minute

The Charms Practical is stacking on top of the Daily O.W.L. as a second reason to open the site every day, and unlike trivia, it’s pure reflexes — no lore required, so it’s an easy thing to challenge a friend on (“I got an O, what did you get?”). If your house is chasing the top of the leaderboard, 30 points a day per player adds up fast across a common room.

The practical is one room in a much bigger space — the same page has the walk across the Black Lake, the Great Hall, the four house common room doors, and the Owlery letter tool for sending someone a Hogwarts acceptance letter by owl. If you haven’t wandered through the full castle yet, the Charms Practical is as good a reason as any to finally go.

Already sorted and looking to gear up your house pride? The house-specific gift guides are sorted by crest, so you don’t have to hunt.
